Etsy Aug 2026 Policy Changes: What Every Seller Needs to Know

1. Original Design Requirement for Computerized Tools

This is the biggest change. If you use computerized tools like laser cutters, sublimation printers, or vinyl cutters, your products must now feature your own original design.

What this means in practice:

• Purchased templates, licensed clipart, and stock design files no longer qualify as handmade
• If your process involves taking a purchased design and transferring it onto mugs, slates, or tote bags — those listings will be removed
• You must be the creator of the design, not just the person who printed or cut it

What to do:Audit every listing that uses computerized tools. If the design isn't yours, either create your own version or remove the listing before August 11.

2. Animal Fur Ban

Products made from animal fur — including mink, fox, and rabbit — are banned if the animal was killed primarily for its pelt. This applies to all listings, including vintage items. Etsy is not offering the usual vintage exemption here.

What to do: If you sell any fur products, remove them. There is no grandfather clause or vintage exception.

3. Stricter AI Disclosure

Etsy has been tightening AI disclosure rules throughout 2025-2026, but the August update makes enforcement significantly stricter. If any part of your product was created with AI assistance, you must:

• Disclose AI usage in your listing description
• Select “Designed by” (not “I made it”) in the “About this Item” section if the primary visual was AI-generated
• Demonstrate meaningful creative input — bulk-generated AI outputs with zero curation will be removed

4. Prohibited Items Updates

The prohibited items list has been expanded to include:

• High-powered magnets
• Weapons and weapon-adjacent items (stricter definitions)
• Items that promote hate or violence (broader enforcement)

5. Trademark Enforcement Is Ramping Up

While not a new policy, Etsy has partnered more aggressively with brand rights holders in 2026. Automated monitoring systems now catch trademark violations faster than ever. One complaint from a major brand like Disney or Nike can result in immediate permanent suspension.
