My Etsy Shop Got Suspended — What to Do Next

Step 1: Find out exactly why

Etsy almost always tells you the reason — you just have to find it. Check, in this order:

1. The email from Etsy (check spam too) — it usually names the policy or the specific listing involved
2. Your Shop Managernotifications and the “Your account” banner when you log in
3. Any “Case” or message from Etsy's Trust & Safety or Intellectual Property team

Step 2: Identify which type of suspension it is

The right next move depends entirely on the cause. The common ones:

• Trademark / copyright complaint — a brand reported one or more of your listings. This is the number-one cause of permanent bans.
• Prohibited or misrepresented items— something you listed isn't allowed, or isn't what it claims to be
• Missing disclosures — undisclosed AI-generated content or production-partner fulfillment
• Billing / payment hold — an unpaid balance or a failed payment method. Usually the easiest to fix.
• Account-quality flags — a spike in cases, refunds, or negative reviews can trigger a review

Step 3: Fix the underlying issue before you appeal

Appealing without fixing anything almost always fails. Depending on the cause:

• Remove or edit every listing that references a brand, character, team, or trademarked phrase — including indirect ones like “inspired by”
• Pay any outstanding balance and update your payment method
• Add the disclosures you were missing (AI usage, production partners)
• Resolve open cases and refund/communicate with affected buyers

Step 4: Write a calm, specific appeal

Reply to Etsy's email or use the appeal link in your account. Keep it short, factual, and non-defensive:

Don't argue that the rule is unfair, don't send multiple messages a day, and don't threaten chargebacks — all of these hurt your case.

Step 5: If it's permanent

Permanent suspensions for repeated IP violations are difficult to reverse, and there's no guaranteed path back. Some sellers have reported limited success escalating through BBB.org.
